I run Thavin & Marcob primarily from home. As some of you may know I had
a houseguest come stay with us last month. Trying to efficiently work
from home when you have a houseguest. Is a more difficult task than
I had ever thought, These new sets of obstacles that I faced inspired
today's blog post. On how to effectively and efficiently work from
Home when you have a house guest staying with you.
Getting Them To Understand
If your house guest is older in age. It might be hard for them to understand the concept of running a business from home. It was for my houseguest to understand. In my home I have a designated area where I work and a fairly specific schedule I follow daily in order to accomplish all of the work that needs to be done. The first problem/obstacle that I encountered was that she did not fully understand that even though I am home. I am still working as if I was in a traditional office at a traditional job.
If you find yourself in a similar situation. I would suggest you try a few things to help with the situation. Try to explain to them that you are in fact working. Let your houseguest know that even though they are on vacation and you love having them for a visit you are not actually on vacation. Explain that you are still obligated to work. I would suggest you explain this to them before they are actually in your house. I mistakenly did not which made things harder for me in the end.
If that dose not work out like it did for me. Try putting in headphones and listening to music, lectures, or podcasts. Something that will help get you in the mind frame of solely focusing on your work and getting it done. I figure this trick out a little too late. So for most of my houseguest's trip I ended up staying up way too late to get things done. While this helped to inspire new creativity within me. It also really messed up my sleep schedule and left me feeling exhausted. If your struggling with creativity try changing up the hours you work. While it can be hard to adjust. For me it did prove to be creatively beneficial.
What I Learned For Next Time
Having a houseguest can be disruptive to the normalcy of any household.
While there are no clear answers or solutions on how to lessen the disruption.
I can offer a few tips that might help you.
1. Let your guest know about your schedule ahead of time
2. Stick to your schedule
3. Share what your working on with your houseguest.
Let them see your passion and how much you love what you do.
4. Don't feel guilty about not entertaining your houseguest 24/7.
They will be okay managing on their own for a little bit.
*I picked up some brochures from the visitors center
with different activities they could do while I was working.*
Being stressed when you have a houseguest is no fun at all.
The stress not only affects you, but your houseguest as well.
I really hope the next time you find yourself in a similar situation
these tips will provide you with some insight on how to handle
your work load and your houseguest.
Talk to you soon,
