I wanted this article to focus around the idea of balancing family life and work life. While I stared to get all of my ideas on the page. I realized that this topic was slowly developing into an extremely long article. I also discovered that this topic should not be covered with a few quick tips and tricks. Handling family and work is a very real and important daily struggle for so many of us. To fully cover on how I believe you can better manage your family life and work life. I have made the decision to create a three part series. Here is part one, be prepared for part two and three in the next following days. What to expect In the next week we will cover a different array of topics..
Which will include discussions on:
These five topics are the ones that I feel are the most important aspects in finding a healthy balance between work and family life.
A Place To Start
Everyone has their own unique set of life values.
Which can be broken up into three different categories.
1. Moral Values
Moral values refers to the values you have on subjects such as stealing or murder.
2. Work Values
Work values also referrer to your work ethic. It is the value you hold in a work setting. For instance what you perceive as acting professional and how you choose to dress.
3. Family Values
Family values refers to the values that you customary learn in a family setting.
For example having open communication at family dinners, helping each other out, or how you choose to treat each member. Are examples of family values.
Why Are Values Important
Most of us are naturally aware of the values we hold. It Is one of those things that gently guide us throughout the day. It is also the thing that helps us to determine how we interact with those around us. I am starting out the discussion with the idea of values because it is important, your values have value.
You Have to Know what Is Important To You
Before you can start the task of balancing out work and family. You must first know what values are the most important for both your family and your business. For instance if you value family dinners. Then late nights spent at the office must be sacrificed. It dose however become increasingly tricky if you top goal/priority at work is to achieve a promotion. It can be really easy to persuade yourself that giving up family dinners for a possible promotion is a justifiable reason. However the possibility of guilt arising from this choose is very real. Here is a space where you can visit a situation like so and decide what it is that you place the higher amount of value on. You can also think of ways that you can achieve both goals (family dinners and promotion) without having to fully sacrifice one to get the other. For example in order to spend dinner with your family and still put in the extra work for the promotion. You might come in early or work through lunch. This way the values placed on both are still achieved.
How To Find Your Top Values One thing I love is a good list. It just so happens that creating a list of your values that incorporate your family and your work will be quite beneficial for you. Once you have your list completed, circle the top five for each. The five that you have circled are the ones you should focus on. Although you should make a note to revisit your list every six months. As life changes, you and your values will too.
I hope that today's discussion was found helpful. The goal that we wish for you to obtain is balance between your family life and your work life. The next discussion will touch on the topics of Scheduling, Boundaries and Support Networks. I have chosen these three topics because Those are the ones that I struggled with the most!
