In today's day and age most of us get caught up in the idea that Christmas is about giving and receiving physical gifts from those around you. A lot of us desire that picture perfect Christmas moment, dinner, and memories. I being included. Which invokes us to spend hours upon hours of endless shopping, gift hunting, gift wrapping, decorating, cooking, and baking.
This is what Christmas as evolved into, but if you take a look back in time. You'll find out the rich history that Christmas has instilled within its core. Since it is Christmas Eve I thought there no better time than now to share with you some of my favorite Christmas history facts.
In what year was Christmas first celebrated?
Christmas was celebrated in the year 336 in the Roman Empire under the rule of Constantine. Constantine is known as the first Christian Roman Emperor. It has been said that he created the celebration of Christmas in order to unite his people. During the time of Constantine rule there was quite a bit of unrest between Christians and non-Christians.
When did Christmas carols first come about?
The majority of the popular icon Christmas songs that we know and love are surprisingly no where as old as Christmas day itself. While there is no real way to know of when, where, and who sang the fist Christmas song. It is known that the ones we sing annually have a time stamp no older than 200 years. One can take an educated guess and come to the conclusion that win the fist Christmases religious hymns we sang in celebration.
Where did the legend of Santa come from?
Santa is known all over the globe by many different names. The first sighting of Santa has been debated for some time now. There are some who believe the first Santa sighting was in 280 and others who believe the first Santa sighting was in 1881.

The idea of a Santa stems from the Dutch lore of Sinterklaas or St. Nicholas of Myra.
Why does Santa use reindeer and not elk?
Most believe that the story of Santa's reindeers stem from a publishing in 1821. Although an author near and dear to my heart Washington Irving writes of the flying to the myth of Santa in 1812. Before these two instances it was know that St. Nicholas of Myra and Sinterklaas were known to use a white steed. Mainly because both were considered to be part of the noble class within there respective countries.
What is Christmas?
Christmas is simply a feeling. It's something that enters the room and your heart. That is unless you are like the Grinch or scrooge. Christmas is about goodwill and spending time with those you love.
