When the idea for this article first came to mind. Immediately the faces of my two adored grandmothers came to mind. Both of my grandmothers were these beautifully strong women who had so much wisdom to offer the eager and restless mind of the youth. I will admit at times I am sure they thought that I was insanely helpless thinking that I needed all the help and guidance that I could get.
Today I would like to share with you 5 sayings from my childhood.
That at times were whispered to me, while others time were relatedly said
with a stern tone of voice.
You Can Count Your Friends On One Hand
One of my grandmothers believed completely and truly that no matter what stage you are in your life. Your true friends, the ones who will do anything for you. Can be counted on one hand. I personally find this to be true. No matter the day of the week, the year, or your age. 5 true friends is all that you will encounter. The rest are just acquaintances who find themselves in your life for a reason, season, or just passing through.
Beds Are For Sleeping
This is something both of my grandmothers believed in. Beds are made for sleeping so no you do not need to sit there with your book and there is no laying around listening to the radio. A bed surved one function and one alone.
Don't Tell Her Your Name
I was only told this one once, but it was said with such conviction that it was just something that always stayed with me. Apparently the woman she was speaking of was a known witch within the community. If a witch knows your name she can cast a spell on you. Sounds a little out there, but you never know. Maybe one day it will come in handy for you.
Don't Scratch Your Palms When They Itch
My uncle once told me something that I had never heard before. It's strangeness I believe is what made it stick around all these years for me. From what I understand it changes as listeners become the tellers, but from the version I heard if your right palm itches you are going to need money. You need to refrain from scratching it because if you the money you need won't come. If your left palm starts to itch it means that money is coming. If you want it to appear then you should not scratch because if you did it would make it disappear.
Your itchy palms controlling your money sounds admittedly crazily hilarious, but guess who doesn't itch her palms because of it.
All Your Heads Should Be Facing The Same Way
This one I will admit that I tell my children time and time again. At first it was to prevent them from wadding up their dollars and stuffing them into their pockets. Although I also chose to share this saying with them because it was one that I heard growing up.
The way it works is all the heads on your paper money should be facing the same direction. I have been saying this over and over to the kids for years. Just last week we opened my youngest wallet. We found that his heads were not facing the same way and asked him why. He looks at us baffled saying yes they were. We insist that they are not to which he grabs the dollars and shows us that all of there eyes are looking in the same direction. What!!!! I never thought of it like that.
SO who knows if this really does anything but keep your wallet organized
When we were growing up the adults around us use to say some of the weirdest stuff and it wasn't until I became a parent that I realized I started to say some crazy stuff. Some of it was because of something I heard growing up and some where things I use to just make up in the moment.
What are some of the saying you remember from your childhood?
