Summer Saturday Markets have started to pop up all across the Pacific Northwest
I for one am extremely excited to pull out my Market bag and begin exploring all the goodies that Washingtonians produce. The best thing about a Saturday Market for me is getting to meet different farmers and small business leaders. I also find the welcoming and festive atmosphere that always surrounds a Saturday Market a huge bonus.
This year we have decided to do a short series on the different Saturday Markets around us. We thought it would be the perfect way to explore, enjoy the weather, meet new people/business, and to share our experiences with you.
If you're not following us on Instagram jump on over to see what we get up to on our days away from work.
Coupeville Washington is one of my favorite places. The area is lovely and the community is always welcoming/friendly to everyone that walks its streets. Seeing that we do not live that far away we arrived a few minutes early. Which means we were privileged to see the opening of the Market. After each vender was asked if they were ready. A shout was yelled across the field informing people that the Market was now open. It was fun to be apart of this moment. Especially since we have been to this market a few times over the years and have never experienced this.
One of our favorite stands is comprised of a man who makes some of the best Kettle Corn we have ever had. The scent of the freshly made Kettle Corn fills the air as everyone intently awaits for the open announcement to be made. In the first few moments there is a calm excitement that fills both the venders and its patrons. The vender must be excited to show case their works and the patrons are excited to restock on their beloved goodies and to find new interesting items.
Coupeville Saturday Market is located behind the Coupeville Public Library. This is great news if you are a book lover, because Saturday Market means Library Book Sales. So if you are out in Coupeville for the weekend and find yourself missing a good read. Then the Coupeville Public Library might just be the stop for you.
The venders are very welcoming and at ease with themselves as well as with their products. The first both we came to was a vender who sells wool toys for puppies. She kindly explained to us why their are great for growing puppies and how easy they are to clean when they get a bit too dirty. We however did not purchase one because both our dogs are old and are quite picky when it comes to toys.
As we continued to visit each both. We came across a man who was selling Cherry Chocolate Tomatoes plants. I had no idea such a tomatoes existed, but we found it intriguing enough to purchases ourselves one. Hopefully in about 70 days I will know what a Cherry Chocolate Tomato tastes like. I actually ended up purchasing two types of tomato's from this vender. The second was a Gold Metal Tomato. However the best part about this market stand was not that I was introduced to different tomato plants . It happened about 10 minutes after we left his stand. He saw us walking past his market again and offered tips on how to help grow out tomato plants. He kindly let us know that in this area the wind it the worst thing for the plants and informed us on how to protect them. Not only did we pick up two really cool tomato plants, but we also got the added bonus of helpful and friendly gardening tips.
Just a both or so down the line. We came across a vender who makes handmade jewelry. All of his pieces were wonderful pieces and unique. Perfect for everyday. As we looked through his creations. He asked us about our weekend plans and told us his inspiration behind the design of some of his rings. He have made several rings where he combined Silver, Copper, and Brass into a almost braided like pattern. He told us that he came up with the idea to combine all of the metals in one ring. So that one would not have so much trouble trying to match the metals with their other jewelry. He wanted his rings to simply go with anything or to outstandingly stand alone on your hand. I for one relate to this problem and love his idea for the solution. So I ended up buying two. The man was even kind enough to give us a $5 discount.
As we reared the end of the Market line up. We encountered a family that was selling homemade Dog Treats. They had so many different options and they were all very wallet friendly. Since my dogs don't do well in public. I picked up a few different types for them to try. We grabbed 3 $1 bags, Peanut Butter Cookie, Pumpkin Cookie, and a ??. My two dogs love them and they are pretty picky almost annoyingly so. I did forget to see how many cam in a bag. However we purchased them almost a week ago and my two dogs are still set for another few days..
While the Coupeville Saturday Market is comprised of maybe 15-20 venders. The intamtae atmosphere that makes it all the more worth going to. Their is a calm vibe that infects everyone. Making people want to stop and talk about their different products and provide fun backstory or insight. That they might not get to share at a bigger Market.
The last Stand we visited held our Find Of The Day. This magical and delicious product is Carmel Goat Milk Cajeta. The Caramel is amazing in both taste and in texture. We purchased an Original Flavor and a Hazelnut Flavor. Both are mouth watering good.
I put some in my coffee one evening. Never before would I have thought to add Caramel to my normal in house drip coffee. However the addition of the Carmel took my tastes buds on a wonderful vacation that might turn into a permanent destination for me. I even drizzled some of it on Vanilla Bean ice cream and was astonished. When my mouth exploded with wonderment on how good these two seeming simple foods mesh so perfectly together.
All In All our Morning at the Coupeville Saturday Market was perfect. We meet some wonderful and amazing new venders and found a few new favorites. We are headed up to the Port Townsend Farmers Market soon! Which I am very excited for. Check back in to read our article of our experience there. Make sure to follow us on all of our other Social Medias to keep -up-to- date on all the things we find ourselves getting up to.
